Land Use Planning Principles and Practices
Project Abstract: Land use planners strive to reflect goals and strategies to achieve social, economic, and environmental objectives for both present and future generations. Planners, regardless of where they work, rely on the best available scientific, experiential, and Indigenous knowledge to inform these plans. Plans are developed based on community input and through meaningful consultation with aboriginal communities. In order for meaningful input and engagement in plan development, aboriginal community members need basic knowledge of planning processes, and land management methodologies, data collection, management, analysis, and reporting. There is a need for development of planning principles and the means to share and have these principles adopted at various planning scales. Activities in this project will contribute to an increased understanding and use of knowledge based land use principles and practices. This will lead in increased understanding and inclusion of indigenous knowledge and principles in land use policies and plans.
