Sustainable Forestry Extension for Small Tenures
Project Abstract: There is a need for extension programming specific to the management of small tenures, due to the fact that aboriginal, woodlots, and community forest licensees face unique challenges. This year’s activities include outreach and peer assistance to small tenures, partnering on a SFU led Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) project on community forests, and publishing a chapter in the Community Forestry Guidebook on safety on community forests. Faculty from SFU and UBC jointly submitted a SSHRC proposal on the economic, ecological, and institutional transformations which are possible through community forests titled “Community Forests as a New Model for Forest Management in British Columbia”. Activities to be undertaken under this proposal (if approved) are extension notes and helping organize a workshop on successful community development practices on community forests. An activity under this project is preparing a LINK article on desirable legal, administrative, and structural options for community and aboriginal forest management. Another activity is partnering the British Columbia Community Forestry Association (BCCFA) in implementing a Vancouver Foundation to assist First Nations and rural communities develop sustainable and viable community supported forests and businesses.
