Synthesizing Research Results for Natural Resource Practitioners on the effects on forest dynamics of managing for diverse values

Project Abstract:
The activities in this project will focus on increasing access to timely, relevant and trustworthy information on the effects on forest dynamics of managing for diverse values on the landscape. This will be accomplished primarily through written materials which will include syntheses of the research on, the effects of whole tree harvesting on soil nutrients, management practices in terms of stand structure, biodiversity and forest dynamics to achieve ecosystem recovery objectives, and ecosystem productivity. Also included in this project are a number of extension notes and discussion papers for the BC Journal of Ecosystem Management (JEM) as well as several LINK newsletter articles. Topics for JEM papers include a variable retention discussion paper and two extension notes on the shelterwood silvicultural system; one on the definition and use of this system and the second on the residual stand dynamics associated with this silvicultural system. Topics for LINK articles include the Northern Silviculture Committee annual winter conference and summer field tour as well as several articles designed to raise the awareness of LINK readers of FSP funded projects related to ecosystem productivity and natural disturbance. This project will also encompass outreach to natural resource managers and researchers in the areas of natural disturbance regimes and ecosystem recovery in different biogeoclimatic zones as well as peer assist to other specialists within FORREX working on activities related to this project’s topic area.
