Extension Leadership and Capacity Building in the Conservation Community

Project Abstract:
Extension is an effective means of achieving conservation goals. FORREX extension specialists are well versed in approaches for planning effective extension programs; however, specific client groups would also benefit from gaining skills in this area. These client groups include researchers, educators, policy-makers, and conservation groups (such as Species at Risk Recovery Teams). Over the last several years, the EMCB cluster has worked hard to improve the skills of these groups, particularly Recovery Teams, in the area of extension program planning and delivery. This project captures activities related to continuing to improve our clients’ skills in this area. As many of these activities focus on Species at Risk recovery, they also align with priorities identified by the Sustainability Program Advisory Committee of the Forest Science Program. Recovery teams which are able to plan effective extension strategies are more likely to increase the use of scientific, experiential, and indigenous knowledge in maintaining critical habitat for species and ecosystems at risk.

In 2007-08, the following activities related to this project are planned: participation and extension advice to the Spotted Owl Recovery Team and other recovery teams, and extension training for the Ministry of Environment, particularly related to Species at Risk.
