Watershed Management Extension
Project Abstract: The Watershed Management (WM) community spans many disciplines that include hydrologists, geoscientists, planners, policy-makers, fish habitat biologists and researchers. The diversity of the Watershed Management community often leads to conflicting objectives that are based on different knowledge sets and perceptions. This project is designed to engage the watershed management community in a dialogue to increase the synthesis of information, increase learning in the Watershed Management community, and improve access to relevant and appropriate information that can be applied by the broader forestry community. The following activities with geographic significance throughout BC were created to address identified needs. Workshops designed for researchers, forest planners, watershed management practitioners and policy-makers are planned on a variety of timely topics. A workshop to extend the current state of MPB–hydrology research project results is planned for the early summer of 2007. The timing of this event is critical and focusses on extending interim results to those who need the information presently. The workshop is important in that it will facilitate the timely dissemination of knowledge more rapidly than would commonly be possible through printed literature. The event will also allow for the interaction of researchers and those who need and use the information. A second planned workshop will update participants on previous and emerging results of the FIA-FSP projects being conducted at the Upper Penticton Creek Research Watershed (LTRI). This event will allow information users to interact with researchers and will provide timely dissemination of relevant knowledge and information. A third planned workshop is the forest hydrology technical field workshop in the Prince George Region that will focus on MPB–water issues. This workshop will meet identified clients needs (Watershed Management Working Group 2006) that include the requirement for increased interaction between the Watershed Management community, practitioners, and natural resource managers and dissemination of research information to forest planners and operations. Ongoing support and assistance from the Watershed Management Working Group will continue in 2007-08 to assist in the delivery of an effective and efficient watershed management extension program. The working group also increases the interaction between several client groups within the Watershed Management community. Several general extension activities will include but not be limited to peer assistance on client and FORREX team projects; proactive outreach; and response to extension requests relating to watershed management. A core focus of this activity is to provide assistance to FIA-FSP researchers with extension delivery related to their projects and with proposals and extension planning for 2008-09. In 2007-08, the extension specialists will also assist with the development and delivery of three FIA-FSP synthesis projects on:
