Extending Ecosystem Management and Conservation Innovations in Planning, Implementation and Monitoring
Project Abstract: Extension, or the two-way communication of information needs and knowledge, is a very effective way of changing practices by increasing the use of scientific, indigenous and experiential knowledge in natural resource management decision-making. This approach may be seen as a step above technology transfer, because information needs and solutions are identified and developed in full collaboration with the clients. As a result, outcomes usually move past the “awareness” level into the realm of changing behaviours and ultimately practices. This project captures all extension-related activities on topics that fall within the EMCB cluster. In general, activities that fall under this project use extension strategies such as outreach and relationship-building, needs assessments, workshops, collaborative problem-solving sessions, conferences, etc. The project also captures activities related to evaluating progress towards meeting specific learning outcomes. As in other projects, priority areas for extension in 2007-08 have been selected by examining key information needs and obtaining input from the EMCB working group. A key source for identifying information needs was the Forest Science Program’s Sustainability Program Advisory Committee’s research priorities for 2006-2010. Evaluating effectiveness of extension activities is key to continued improvement of extension programming. Thus we have planned an overall evaluation report summarizing results from evaluations of specific activities undertaken by the EMCB cluster.
