Ecosystem Management and Conservation Policies and Practices
Project Abstract: At times, addressing knowledge gaps is not sufficient to change practices. Either practitioners require specific training about the issue, or there may be other barriers to changing practices, such as legislative barriers or inventory gaps. This project is a catch-all for Ecosystem Management and Conservation Biology (EMCB) activities that focus on particular issues of practice that require specific training and/or policy changes to improve these practices. These types of approaches are highlighted as an effective strategy in the Provincial Forestry Extension Program Strategic Plan for 2006-2010. Activities that are captured under this project include creating communities of practice related to a specific issue, doing site visits, holding critical issues workshops, and holding public forums on particular issues. The project also captures activities that involve conducting problem analyses on a particular issue to determine how we can address the information needs related to these issues. As in other projects, priorities areas for extension in 2007-08 have been selected by examining information needs from a variety of sources and obtaining input from the EMCB working group. A key source of identifying information needs was the Forest Science Program’s Sustainability Program Advisory Committee’s research priorities for 2006-2010.
